POLICE ARE investigating the circumstances in which a 54-year-old man died yesterday following a police raid on a house in Nicosia during which the man fell or jumped from a first-floor window.
A little after midnight yesterday, police from the Aliens and Immigration Unit went to conduct a check on a flat in Pallouriotissa based on a tip-off that there were people there in possession of fake travel documents and residence permits.
According to a police announcement, police secured on arrival the written consent of the person who opened the door for them to search the flat. That person was a legal resident of Cyprus.
During the search, police found a number of foreign nationals in the flat, both legal and illegal residents on the island. On reaching the fourth and last room in the flat, they found the door was locked. Police knocked on the door but received no response, said the police statement.
On hearing a yell from the other side of the locked door, police reacted immediately, forcing the door open, where they found before them an open window. Using a torchlight, police found below the 54-year-old man lying injured on the ground, some five metres under the window.
The Pakistani national was rushed by ambulance to Nicosia general hospital where he died from his injuries in the early hours of yesterday.
A police spokesman said the 54-year-old had arrived in Cyprus in 2005, where he applied for asylum. His application was rejected in February, 2008. The man appealed the decision, but his appeal was also rejected by the Reviewing Authority in May that same year, after which he was considered illegally resident in Cyprus.
Police said one other Pakistani and two Sri Lankan nationals were arrested during the search for illegals. Paphos Gate police station is continuing investigations.
