The President of the Republic received a delegation of The Elders
The President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias received yesterday at the Presidential Palace, a delegation of The Elders comprising the Archbishop of South Africa Desmond Tutu and the former Prime Minister of Norway Gro Brundtland.
After the meeting, Archbishop Tutu told the press that the delegation is in Cyprus for the premiere of the film «Cyprus: Digging the past in search of the future», which constitutes a joint work of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. He said that during their stay in Cyprus, they had the opportunity to meet with political leaders from both communities.
He also said that the delegation is visiting Cyprus for the fourth time, which demonstrates the commitment on the part of the Elders to the people of Cyprus, their commitment to encourage the achievement of a settlement on the Cyprus problem.
“We want to continue to encourage the leadership of the two communities to ‘please find one another’. We want to continue to encourage them and say that there have been in so many parts of the world intractable, what were regarded as intractable, problems which have been resolved”, the Archbishop said and referred to the examples of Northern Ireland and South Africa.
Concluding, he said that it is possible for Cyprus to be a “Federal Republic of Cyprus.”
For her part, Mrs Brundtland, asked whether she believes that we are nearer or further away from a solution of the Cyprus problem, following the meetings they had in Cyprus, said: “it is much of disappointment that it seems to be more stalemate maybe even on some issues we are going backwards, but this sometimes happens in these kinds of situations, it does not mean that it is not possible to solve".
Concluding, she said that she was convinced that it is possible for a settlement to be achieved. It is a question of leadership on both sides, they know what needs to be done and it is also important that people in those communities are supportive of the vision of a common solution, she said.
